Arenal Volcano

From far away we see the majestic, 7000 years old volcano as it rises in the horizon. It is a mile high and you get to see constant smoke pouring out through it’s 460 feet wide crater. Arenal is one of the most active volcanoes in the country and was earlier considered one of 10 most active volcanoes on earth. If the weather and wind allows you, you will get to see activity and here the sounds of the volcano. The last bug eruption of the volcano was 7th May 1998, that eruption left solidified lava on a surface of almost 1.5 mile square radius. During that day the volcano had 23 eruptions in total, the activity was well supervised and no people were harmed. A visit to Arenal and the town of La Fortuna is so much more than the volcano, you can go relax in volcano-heated hot springs, hike around the volcano and the beautiful surroundings, of course within safe distance. While you stay in the lovely town of La Fortuna you should definitely go visit the breath-taking waterfall, Catarata de La Fortuna, right outside that has a drop of 240 feet. The green surroundings of Arenal are amazingly beautiful and full of birds and animals. Don’t get surprised if you get to see a sloth, coati, or a toucan while hiking in the area.
